HallCraft was a VIP guest at the global leading battery manufacturer VARTA.
Director James Hopcraft flew to VARTA headquarters in Hanover, Germany for a three-day visit.
He joined an elite group of experts of UK motor industry experts for the visit to the Clarios factory.
They were given unprecedented access to the VARTA production line and taken behind the scenes at the world’s leading producer of low-voltage batteries.
VARTA Automotive is powered by Clarios, a global leader in advanced, low-voltage battery technologies.
Their products power seven out of every 10 cars equipped with start-stop technology and are the most popular brand among workshops and installers across Europe.
Amazing Trip
“It was an amazing trip, a fantastic opportunity to see first-hand how an automotive battery is designed, made and distributed,” explained James.
“It is incredible to consider how important quality batters are across a range of vehicle applications, including hidden systems that you perhaps didn’t even know had a battery inside.
“Such is the sensitivity of the production line, we were limited to what we could take images of but believe me, it was so impressive.
“The visit was full of content and activities from start to finish with an afternoon racing electric go-carts which were very fitting given the theme of electrification.
Car Battery
“The journey a 12-volt car battery takes to make is fascinating. From the lead and acid inside to the plastic housing it is sealed in.
“The battery is then brought to life by a huge charging system at the end of the production line, l have never seen so many batteries lined up and being charged at the same time, l’m talking thousands at a time!!
HallCraft is the West Midlands leading independent garage. They provide a unique one-stop shop for motorists providing fixed price servicing, MOTs, accident and smart repairs from their Cradley Heath base.
They have been working with VARTA batteries for many years replacing and upgrading battery systems for thousands of motorists across the West Midlands.
Rich History
VARTA, founded in 1887 by Adolf Muller, have a rich history of producing batteries employing more than 17,000 people in more than 100 countries.
“VARTA make batteries for 7 out of 10 European car manufacturers and produces an incredible range from your traditional SLI lead acid battery, EFB enhanced flooded battery to the more modern AGM absorbent glass mat fitted to cars with stop-start,” James added.
“With manufacturers designing cars that are far more demanding on the 12-volt battery, meaning it has never been more important to have a quality, healthy 12-volt battery fitted to your car.
Reduces Emissions
“Did you know, that even your Electric vehicle has at least one 12-volt battery to power systems including vital components that allow the high voltage traction battery to allow it to function?
“And it doesn’t stop there…..enter the 48-volt lithium battery, a concept that mild hybrid vehicles are now using, this does not fully drive the vehicle, like a high voltage system, but it assists the internal combustion engine, which in turn improves fuel consumption and reduces emissions.”
HallCraft has a robust regime to test, replace and programme – where necessary your vehicle’s battery.

Did you know?
The modern-day car will have:
A battery in your key fob
A 12-volt starter battery (ICE vehicles)
A 12v auxiliary battery – which depending on your power train, supports critical systems whilst the starter battery operates the stop-start system
A lithium battery fitted in an SOS / telematics module hidden away deep inside the vehicle, that’s designed to power, independently, a safety e-call system that communicates with the car and passengers in the result of a breakdown, accident or vehicle theft.
Plus – on mild hybrid, hybrid and BEV (battery electric vehicle) a battery to either drive or assist the drive of the power train.
